Bottom Drains
A bottom drain
improves circulation and allows you to continually flush bottom organic
debris (fish waste, leaves, etc.) form the system and direct the most
polluted bottom water through the biofilter.
Without a bottom drain, debris at the bottom of your pond can create
an "anaerobic" environment (areas without oxygen circulation).
The "aerobic" bacteria (beneficial bacteria) that we initially
try to cultivate in our ponds cannot colonize in these oxygen depleted
areas. Due to the oxygen starvation, "anaerobic" varieties
of bacteria flourish in the bottom of the pond. A by product of the
"anaerobic" bacteria is hydrogen sulfide gas, which is very
rancid smelling and very lethal to fish.
